Portsmouth is a dynamic and vibrant maritime city, bursting with potential. It has a proud naval and maritime heritage and is packed with world class attractions, from the Historic Dockyard and the Mary Rose Museum to the 170m Spinnaker Tower. Mainly located on Portsea Island, Portsmouth is characterised by its miles of coastline, from the beaches at Southsea and Eastney, to the historic waterfront of Old Portsmouth and Spice Island, and the shops and restaurants at Gunwharf Quays, and is recognised as a global centre for marine and maritime industries, as well as being home to the Royal Navy. The seafront also provides the backdrop to the city’s hosting of national and international events, from the international commemorations for D-Day 75 to the America’s World Cup Series, Victorious Festival, and the Formula Kite European Championships in 2023. To the north, the city is surrounded by countryside that rolls on towards the South Downs and is overlooked by Portsdown Hill with its historical Palmerston Forts and spectacular views.
The City Vision sets out what kind of place Portsmouth wants to be by 2040, what its people value, and what they want to prioritise when it comes to key areas of city life. Facilitated by the council, the vision was developed with input from more than 2,500 participants, including local residents and businesses, overseen by a partner board of 13 organisations and networks from across Portsmouth who continue to be committed to working together to help make the Imagine Portsmouth city vision for 2040 a reality.
Portsmouth is well-connected, situated in the prosperous southeast. The city is 70 miles from London and 20 miles from the nearest airport, as great road and rail links and even its own international port, which is the largest council-owned port in the UK and has ambitious plans of its own, with a Port masterplan underway. The Port, and the council owned Dunsbury Park to the north of the city, are also part of the Solent Freeport.
